Bicentennial
Update (July 1, 2008)
The
celebration of our Bicentennial year will begin in September and culminate
with events on September 27 and October 5, 2009. Honoring members,
past and present, who have so selflessly assisted others less fortunate
in the Athens community, is central to our celebration. The Bicentennial
Worship Service and Luncheon are scheduled for September 27. The funds
contributed to the Bicentennial Mission Projects (My Sister's Place
and Amesville/New England Parish) will be presented to the recipients
at the luncheon. A Bicentennial Celebration for the community will
be held on October 5 with the presentation of commissioned music and
a guest speaker.
A
sampling of plans for the year include: the Liturgical Flag Group
making a Bicentennial Quilt, which will hang over the staircase leading
to Fellowship Hall; The Cat's Meow company making a wooden free standing
copy of the church (you may have seen copies of O.U. buildings in
bookstores) which may be purchased for yourself or given as gifts;
the “favorite hymns” submitted will be researched and many of them
sung in services throughout the year and at the Bicentennial events.
Contributions
are being received and pledges/gifts may be made in honor of, or memory
of, somebody who is important to you. As minds begin to focus on summer
plans, we hope that you will consider contributing to the Bicentennial
Mission and Celebration of First Presbyterian Church which occurs
only ONCE each TWO HUNDRED YEARS!
